a personal favourite...
This is one of our personal favourite overnight tours with great scenery, great food and comfortable overnight accommodation at the famous Barrington Guest House. Bring your walking as we offer a choice of short treks deep into the Barrington rainforests and if it’s summer, bring your towel and swimmers!
Heading north from Sydney over the Hawkesbury River, we stop for breakfast at the beautiful river Port of Morpeth in the Hunter Valley. Here we can explore this historic town wher in the 1830s, sailing ships arrived direct from England.
We now follow the Paterson River upstream, turning into the Allyn River valley. After numerous creek crossings, we soon arrive at Upper Allyn, deep in sub-tropical rainforest. Here, there are many deep swimming holes in the crystal clear waters.
On the banks of the Allyn River, lunch is prepared while you walk among the giant Strangler Figs and Forest Oaks which are common in this area.
Now, we climb steeply to Mt Allyn at well over 1000 metres above sea level. Weather permitting, we are afforded stunning views of the Hunter Valley whilst behind us, Barrington Tops awaits, cloaked in the World Heritage listed antarctic beech rainforest.
A short walk through the beech forest brings us to Burraga Swamp, an unusual depression surrounded by thick rainforest and with a thick layer of peat floating on the surface.
Climbing over the divide, we descend into the valley of the Williams River where you have the option to walk down through the rainforest to Rocky Crossing and on to that famous icon of the Hunter, Barrington Guest House. Our accommodation for the night, the guest house was built in 1925 and cooks still prepare meals on a wood fired stove! Here, you can get close and personal with a range of Australian wildlife.
After breakfast, we follow scenic rainforest tracks to follow the Paterson River downstream. Arriving at the lower Hunter vineyards, we sample fine wines and cheeses before our ‘Tastings’ lunch at McWilliams Winery.
We depart Pokolbin to explore the Watagan Mountains before returning to Sydney at approximately 7pm.
